Seed

when i lay there, still, a seed among seeds

i feel the air above me gently below the trees

i look just like the others, small, imperfect, the same

oh how i long to reach the sky high above this plane

warmest and greenest it must be sitting atop the earth

unlike the shade that casts its cold across my tiny turf

when i lay there, still, a seed among seeds

i feel the soil bury me whole and deep

raindrops bathe me watering life into my shade

i am reborn in the dew, a new sapling is made

i grow and i grow and i thrive past the others

as if chosen to blossom I’m an oak among feathers

now i stand there, tall, a tree among trees

i feel the sun surround me warm along my leaves

i look down to the seeds, small, important, and vital

now casting shade to them, and so begins the cycle

warmest and greenest i longed to be, but may have missed the mark

sun could not have been attained before my journey through the dark.
